The Timeless Meaning of Theatre, the Timely Meanings of Critical Discourse

Today, the role of critical discourse is decisive. The role of theatre, however, seems to be constantly marginalized. Thus, to ponder the meaning and meanings of theatre criticism is to understand the deep, essential relationship between thought, culture, and society. Criticism is not what it used to be, although many think it can still hold on to its old routines, merely refocusing strategies of viewing and reviewing. We find it more and more outside the confines of such practices: curators, programmers, academics, playwrights and directors exercise the virtues of our profession more so than those supposedly upholding its necessity. Being a critic in our world, in the specific context of its theatre, is above all a statement of belief and an affirmation of a value system.

The new programme of IATC(HK), aptly titled the International Theatre Critics Dialogue Series, is an exploration of critical discourse in, around, and about theatre. It moves beyond classical definitions, seeking to find new implications of criticism. The ones suggesting them are four important figures of performing arts: Tobias Biancone, Gianina Cărbunariu, Pawit Mahasarinand and Wan-Jung Wei. In times of crisis, they all prove that no dimension of theatre is more poignant than that which constitutes its very critical essence: discovering otherness through dialogue.
